How to link Aadhar with Pan Card online step by step

Income tax department has declared that linking your Aadhar with PAN is mandatory for all citizens. Public advisory said that if you don’t link your PAN with Aadhar then your PAN card will not be operate. If you link PAN-Aadhar now, then you are liable to pay penalty. The deadline date of linking PAN and Aadhar is 31st March 2023. According to the Income tax Act 1961 , it is compulsory to all PAN holders , who do not come under exempt category. If two cards are not linked, it will be become hard process to filing an ITR ( Income Tax Return ).

Why it is mandatory to link Pan-Aadhar ?

Income Tax Department has made it mandatory to link PAN card with Aadhar. An Aadhar contains a unique 12 digit number issued by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) to every resident of India. According to the public advisory, if the PAN is not linked with Aadhar Card before 31st march 2023, the PAN card will not operate. The linking deadline is coming closer, once the deadline is missed then the PAN holder will not be able to use their ten- digit unique alphanumeric number. All the financial transaction will stop working.

Following categories are exempted from Aadhar – PAN linking

  • NRIs
  • Not a resident of India
  • People who is above 80 years as on date
  • Resident of the states – Meghalaya, Assam or Jammu & Kashmir

What happen if you don’t link PAN to Aadhar ?

The PAN Card , which is necessary for making a numbers of financial operations, such as opening Demat accounts , creating a bank account , depositing money into them , buying and selling real estate, if not linked with Aadhar , will be termed invalid. If the two cards are not linked , it will be become challenging to filing an Income Tax Return (ITR), access government services such as obtaining subsidies, applying for a passport etc.

When it is linked to Aadhar , the deactivated PAN will become active.

In case and individual fails to link PAN and Aadhar by the due date , he /she will be held liable to charge of Rs.1000 as penalty while requesting for the linking PAN with Aadhar

How to check PAN number is link to Aaadhar number ?

Last date of linking PAN and Aadhar has been extended from 31st March 2022 to 31st March 2023. The final date to link two cards without paying a fine , was march 2022. Now , to linking PAN-Aadhar a fine must be paid of Rs. 1000 must be paid.

  • Go to the Income Tax efiling portal. Select the ‘ link Aadhar status’ under the quick links on the homepage

How to link Pan to your Aadhar?

There are two main steps to linking your Aadhar to your PAN:

  • Payment of fee on NSDL portal under Major head (0021) and Minor head (500) for assessment year 2023-24.
  • Submit the request of PAN- Aadhar link.

Documents required :

  • Aadhar card
  • Pan Card
  • Mobile no. that is linked to aadhar

I - Fee of link PAN to Aadhar on the NSDL portal

  • Visit to the Tax Payment Page and select the Challan no./ TNS 280 under the non- TDS/TNS category.
  • Select head ‘(0021)’ and then ‘(500)’.
  • Scroll down and select the mode of payment and enter the details ( like your PAN , address, and assessment year 2023-24 etc.)
  • complete the whole process of payment and follow the next steps to submit the PAN and Aadhar link request. We suggest to wait 4-5 days before submitting the request.

II - Submit the request of PAN- Aadhar link online/ offline

You can do linked your Aadhar with your PAN online by logging on to the Income Tax e- filing portal. You can linked your two cards through SMS. There are two methods to linking your PAN with Aadhar:

  • Linking the Aadhar number and PAN through SMS
  • Logging in to your e-filling account.

Method 1 : Linking your Aadhar and PAN via SMS

Income tax department gives us SMS based facility to link their Aadhar and PAN via SMS. This process is done by sending on SMS to either 567678 or 56161. Send SMS to 567678 or 56161 from your registed mobile number in the following way:

UIDPAN < SPACE > < 12 digit Aadhar > < Space > < 10 digit PAN >

For example: UIDPAN 12345678123 ABDCE1234F

Method 2 : Logging into your e-filing account

  • Register at the Income Tax e- filing portal , if you are not registered in e- filing portal.
  • login into the account of e- fling portal by entering the user ID, PAN, Aadhar.
  • Confirm your secure message and enter the password that is set by you while register. And click “Continue” to proceed.
  • The logging I nto the website , click on ‘ Link Aadhar ‘ under the’ Personal Detail’ option.
  • Enter the details such as name, date of birth and gender will already mentioned the details at the time of e- filing portal. Enter you name and Aadhar number as per Aadhar. Verify the derails on the basis of Aadhar card.
  • It is important to agree by selecting the checkbox ‘ I agree to validate my Aadhar details’.

    In the case of only you birth year is mentioned in your Aadhar card , then select the check box of ‘ I have only year of birth in Aadhar card’.

    Select the ‘ Link Aadhar’ button.

  • After that you will receive a pop up message ,informs you that your PAN and Aadhar linked successfully.
